OUR THOUGHTS:

The Shoei VFX-EVO helmet takes the success of the VFX-W a few steps further. It has a strong, aggressive design is quite the attention getter. There are a lot of ridges on the outside that look as if they’ve been chiseled out, which will appeal to many motocross and off-road riders. It retails at over $500, and there are many different design schemes to choose from.

On the inside of the helmet, which weighs just 3.3 pounds, is a dual-density EPS liner. Developers determined where more protection was needed and placed a thicker layer of foam in those spots. For example, the crown has softer material whereas the sides utilize denser material. Another safety feature incorporated in this model is the Motion Energy Distribution System (M.E.D.S.). M.E.D.S. uses an anchored center column and three perimeter columns that can absorb energy and prevent injuries. They do so by rotating upon impact, deflecting some of the energy that can result from a crash.

In terms of how it feels, it has quite a snug fit, typically Shoei sizing has historically leaned towards owners with less than large heads.  Its 3D Max-Dry Interior Padding System is removable, so you can wash it whenever you need to. That being said, it can also be switched out for a different type of padding allowing a customized fit. On hot days on the motocross track or off-road trail, you’ll appreciate the 16 vents spaced throughout the helmet. This is great for venting but also makes it somewhat of a “louder” helmet.

  • Dual EPS liner with internal air channeling to maximize air flow-through ventilation
  • Removable cheeks pads available in optional sizes to personalize rider fitment
  • Motion Energy Distribution System (M.E.D.S.); a new, specially inserted module of the EPS liner
  1. Designed to absorb sudden impacts by reducing rotational acceleration
  2. Shoei in-house testing showed rotational energy is reduced by 15%!
  • 16 Intake / Exhaust vents; additional front air intake scoop vents and two (2) additional, enlarged exhaust outlets maximize air flow ventilation (this is an increase in the number of intake / exhaust vents from its predecessor, the VFX-W)
  • V-470 streamlined visor meshes and integrates directly with the shell mold; three external screws allow for easy installation and removal of the visor with the center screw containing a special, internal screw fixing nut allowing for adjustable visor placement to optimize rider visibility
  • Larger mouth piece (nose cover) for improved air intake and safety; it features mesh to filter dirt and dust and aluminum mesh to filter roost from entering the mouth
  • Ergonomically shaped mud guard

THE BOTTOM LINE:

9.1 Total Score
One of the Best MX Off-Road Helmets Available.

The Shoei VFX-EVO looks like it's predecessor, the much beloved VFX-W. On the inside, it has new safety features like dual-density EPS and M.E.D.S., and it has plenty of vents in an aim to keep riders comfortable.
